The pictures you click with your digital camera are either stored within the camera’s memory or on a memory card inside the camera. The next step is to transfer them to a computer.

USB cables are normally supplied with cameras together with software that can be loaded onto a computer that allows the transfer to take place.

First you will need to install the camera software provided. Connect the USB cable with your camera then plug into your computers USB port. Then using software provided with the camera, the computer should recognize that the camera has been connected and prompt you into downloading your pictures to a specified folder.

To make loading your pictures even more straight forward, a series of USB card readers are now available.

Not all computers have USB functionality and if this is the case then you will need to use a card reader. These are also attached to the computer via a USB cable. Again all you have to do is load the memory card from your camera into the card reader and upload the pictures.

If you need to buy a card reader make sure you buy a reader that is compatible with the storage media that you are using. Although there are some readers that will read more than one type of card you need to ensure, for example, that if you use Smart Media cards then you will need a Smart Media reader.

Once you have connected the camera to the computer, windows operating system will detect the connection and ask you what you want to do with your pictures. It will prompt you to use the import wizard or copy and paste from the camera folder (you might need to open a folder DCIM to access the pictures).
